Cyprus’s Tallest Tower – Aura Project Approved Amidst Controversy
Cyprus’s Tallest Tower – Limassol’s seafront will soon host Cyprus’s tallest building, the Aura project. Standing at 181.5 meters with 44 floors, it has finally received approval after heated debates.
Municipal groups in Limassol clashed over the tower’s height and plot suitability. Despite initial disagreements, the Limassol City Council ratified the Council of Ministers’ decision.
This decision allows the unification of underground public spaces for the project’s development. Additional land beyond a public road was granted for higher building density. This move faced objections from groups like AKEL and EDEK but was supported by the majority.
Compensatory measures include creating a public square, park, cultural center, and underground parking. Opponents raised concerns about economic justification, environmental impact, and plot compatibility. Mayor Nicolaides, though initially opposed, respected the democratic process and affirmed the decision.
The majority, defended by the head of DISY municipal group, stressed responsible decision-making. The Aura project, designed by Foster + Partners, aims to be a modern, ecological tower.
It will integrate seamlessly into Limassol’s urban fabric, prioritizing resident comfort and area improvement. Rising above an urban park, it maintains connections with the seafront, enhancing ventilation, lighting, and views. Despite controversies, the Aura project progresses, poised to reshape Limassol’s skyline. It sparks ongoing debates about urban development, economic priorities, and environmental concerns.
